Our organization was founded in October 1993 to address the need for unity and support within the African-American community. At Positive Directions Equals Change, our mission is to foster personal and social responsibility through a guiding philosophy, principles, and programs. We aim to not only meet human needs but also empower individuals to become self-aware agents of their own liberation.

Our support group, known as "The Gathering," serves as a structured forum where African-American individuals can share and discuss what matters most to them. Effective listening is a cornerstone of "The Gathering," helping participants connect more deeply and enrich their relationships.

In "The Gathering," listening goes beyond mere hearing; it's about actively supporting the speaker's exploration of their thoughts and feelings. In our daily lives, we often focus on meeting others' needs and solving problems, leaving little room for self-reflection. This lack of time for introspection means we rarely understand why our solutions work or don’t.

"The Gathering" provides a valuable opportunity for thoughtful reflection. It includes feedback sessions to help participants learn to trust and hear the insights of their peers. Many African Americans struggle with a lack of self-awareness and understanding of their identity. As the Afrikaans saying goes, “If you don’t know who you are, any history will do.” Welcome to America.
